In 2003, our center handled 22,310 calls, including 386 suicide calls and 18 crisis situations where an intervention was required on behalf of the caller.  Many callers were able to calm down by the end of the call, which ended on a more positive note, or they were given referrals at the end of the call and/or encouraged to call back again:

Very depressed male whose mom had died suddenly 3 weeks before..

Frantic mother whose son (17) was feeling suicidal. Caller was afraid to go to sleep at night and was watching him constantly.

Father concerned about his alcoholic daughter (16) who has been drinking since age 10.

Female caller with a long history of family problems. Calling on 1-800-SUICIDE from college. Thanksgiving is the anniversary of her suicide attempt 4 years ago.

Heartbroken male whose girlfriend commited suicide 2 months before with pills she found in his cabinet.

Young woman confined to nursing home with rare disorder (multiple cysts that grow on her body). Cysts are now in her lungs, liver and brain.

Pregnant young woman (18) who ran away from her abusive family.

Teenager concerned about her ffriend who was showing signs of suicide - depression, drinking, sleep problems, loss of appetite and wanting to cut himself.

Grief-striken caller's young daughter had died suddenly of an undiagnosed heart problem.

Caller scared about the coming war and possible new disease.

Distraught female caller who was due to get married the day before and her fiance' was a "no-show".

Recovering alcoholic who called to share his 4th step. He also admitted to free-basing cocaine.

Caller (18) suffering with Post-Partum depression. Baby's father took off. Caller is living in one room of a friend's home. Not eating or sleeping properly.

Caller's son (19) is going to jail for 10 years in early June. He is threatening suicide. Caller found a noose he made from a sheet in the attic. Very concerned.

Caller looking for help for her daughter who is grieving a "stillborn" child.

Caregiver to an 89 year old father who suffers from Alzheimer's disease.

Daughter in a hospital psych ward and caller was thinking back to "What might have been."

Teen caller (16) feeling suicidal because his girlfriend has been diagnosed with Leukemia.

Male caller having a panic attack and heart palpitations.

Female caller who had recently returned from a 29-day hospital stay for anorexia. Due to enter a partial day program and trying to keep promises to her doctor.
